Cultural Sensitivity

Local Customs

  • Dress modestly, especially in rural areas or religious sites.

  • Ask for permission before taking photos of people, especially women.

  • Avoid public displays of affection.

Interacting with Locals:

  • Respect bargaining etiquette in markets (start low but be polite).

  • Greet people with “Salam Alaikum” (peace be upon you) and be mindful of local gestures. And a wave of the hand + a hello is JUST fine as well.

Safety and Security

  • Buddy system - your roommate is your buddy. Make sure you locate each other upon arriving back at the bus.

  • Safety Tips:

    • Stay in groups during free time. Although safe, do not wander off alone.

    • Be aware of surroundings.

    • Avoid sharing too much personal information with strangers.

  • For emergencies, please contact your MeWananGo Host immediately via whatsapp or in person.

Health and Wellness

Food and Water:

  • Drink only bottled or filtered water.

  • Avoid raw vegetables or unpeeled fruits if concerned about food safety.

Staying Comfortable:

  • Prepare for possible digestive adjustments; bring anti-diarrheal medication just in case.

  • Stay hydrated, especially in the desert.

Money and Tipping

Currency: Moroccan Dirham (MAD).

  • Carry small denominations for tipping and shopping in souks/shops.

  • Some more established shops will take credit card - however you will get a better deal in cash.

Tipping Guidelines:

  • USD is ok for MeWannaGo Host and Local Host

  • Have small bills (in durham) ready for services like porters, restaurant staff, tour guides and driver.

Communication Plan

  • Group communication (e.g., WhatsApp group).

  • Wi-Fi availability and options for SIM cards if needed.

Etiquette for Religious Sites

  • Dress conservatively when visiting mosques (arms and legs covered, scarf for women).

  • Maintain quiet and respectful behavior.

  • Remove shoes when entering mosques or religious homes.

Have the time of your life!! ❤️
